History

The idea of establishing the Translator's House in Tarazona was suggested in 1988 by Francisco Uriz, twice winner of the Spanish Prize for Translation and one of the Spanish translators who has most contributed to the dissemination of Nordic literature in Spain.

The birth of the House coincided with other, similar initiatives across Europe, which came about with the support of a number of highly-regarded literary translators and professional associations of literary translators.

There is a network of European literary translation centres, RECIT (Réseau Européen des Centres Internationaux de Traducteurs littéraires). At present the network has Translator's Houses in Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden.
